Swiss Technology Award

In February, the Swiss Technology Award 2003 was given to SwissProbe AG / University of Basel with Prof. Hans Hug, Peter Kappenberger, Sascha Martin, Yves Pellmont, and Peter Reimann for "Quantum Leap on the harddisk".

Concentris GmbH with Dr. Urs Hubler and Dr. Felice Battiston received a diploma for their "Cantisens - on the quest for easy analysis". Both companies participated in this year’s Cebit. 90 projects were submitted to the Swiss Technology Award, ten teams received a diploma for their research activities, and four teams from research and industry were nominated for the Award.


W. A. de Vigier Award

Concentris GmbH with Dr. Urs Hubler and Dr. Felice Battiston were nominated for the W.A. de Vigier Award 2003 for their approach to analyzing mixtures by cantilever arrays.

SPS Award for Applied Physics

The research "Insulator at the ultrathin limit: MgO on Ag(001)" by Sylvia Schintke, S. Messerli, M. Pivetta, F. Patthey, L. Libioulle, M. Stengel, A. De Vita, and W.-D. Schneider (Physical Review Letters 87, 276801) received the SPS Award for Applied Physics in March 2003. In a festive ceremony at this year’s SPS Meeting, Dr. Sylvia Schintke received the award for her PhD thesis that she finalized in 2001.

New Professor at LMU Munich

Dr. Bianca Hermann has received and accepted a call as full professor (C3) to the Ludwig-Maximilians-University of Munich with her research base being located in the Walther-Meissner-Institute for Low Temperature Research (Bavarian Academy of Science) in Garching. She officially started at the beginning of July 2003 and is now an official member of the Center of Nanoscience (CeNS) of the LMU. As her infrastructure in Munich still needs to be completed, she is available in Basel at least until midsummer 2004.
