In recent months, a number of articles about safety in nanoscale science and nanotechnology were published in the press. The NCCR management published the following positioning statement concerning this issue. A comprehensive questions and answers document will soon be available on the Internet.

Positioning Statement
Within the National Center of Competence in Research (NCCR) Nanoscale Science we take the concerns that were recently mentioned in the media concerning safety in nanoscale science and nanotechnology very seriously. In the current debate, we clearly have to differentiate between unrealistic horror visions and real safety aspects. There are certain open questions that need to be answered (e.g. possible toxicity of nanoparticles). To study these issues, long-term studies lasting several years are required. Research studies that will provide the required data are currently planned or already running – independently of a call for a moratorium.

Additionally, the benefits as well as possible risks of nanoscale science and nanotechnology have to be openly discussed between scientists and the public. Within the NCCR Nanoscale Science it is our ambition to constantly keep the public informed by providing scientifically correct information about nanoscale science and nanotechnology and to enter into a constructive dialogue with all stakeholders.
