Nanonews September 2008
WORDS FROM THE DIRECTOR
Dear colleagues
It is with my utmost pleasure to let you know that our pre-proposal for the third phase has been accepted by the SNF. It has been pointed out by the Vice-director of the SBF, Gérard Escher and before by the Scientific Review Panel, that the research within our NCCR is excellent and compares with the best centers in Nanoscience world-wide.
Looking back to our Davos workshop in early June this year, I'm convinced that the quality of work which is done in our NCCR will still increase during the upcoming years. It was a fascinating and fruitful workshop and the banquet at the Schatzalp remains in excellent memory. I hope that the upcoming years will be as interesting as the last ones and I look forward to stimulating discussions with you.
Best regards
Christian Schönenberger
EVENTS
Swiss Workshop on Nanoscience Davos, 4th - 6th June 2008
Together with the University of Fribourg, EMPA, PSI and the newly established Adolphe Merkle Institute the SNI organized a scientific workshop in the congress facilities of Davos. In the famous lecture halls, where Kofi Annan and Bill Gates meet once a year, 140 scientists from Switzerland met for a scientific exchange. Beside the various excellent talks and the poster session on a grand scale, the participants enjoyed the highly professional conference facilities and services as well as the well known Grison style dishes.
The highlights of the meeting were the conference banquet in the art nouveau interior of hotel Schatzalp and the presentation on Swiss research funding concepts, given by the Vice-director of the State Secretariat for Education and Research, Gérard Escher. The presentation demonstrated the concepts that lead to a political decision and gave an insight into the basis for decision-making in Swiss research funding.
The next scientific exchange within the NCCR Nano will be held in June 2009 in Basel.
