Nanonews February 2009
WORDS FROM THE DIRECTOR
Dear colleagues
The year 2009 has begun with a series of events. The presentation of the Nanoscience Curriculum at the "Infotag" has become more and more professional thanks to all the students who helped.
The traditional "Nano in the Snow"-Event again was an interesting mixture of Science and social contacts and I'm happy that we could present the first Argovia Professors to the media the 26th January.
It is my great pleasure to announce that both Dagmar Klostermeier and Roderick Lim have accepted to chair module 1 (Nanobiology) within the NCCR Nanosccale Science for the third phase. We appreciate this engagement very much and welcome Rod and Dagmar.
I'm also happy to let you know that the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNF) has accepted our proposal for the third phase and hence the NCCR Nanoscale Science will continue for another four years. Although our research has been rated among the best in the world, the SNF was forced to reduce our budget to 50%. This fact may have consequences on some of the NCCR projects. Together with the module leaders we will adapt our project plan.

IN THE MEDIA
Christian Schönenberger in Swiss TV
Christian Schönenberger has been selected for the prestigeous Scientist Portrait Series "ScienceSuisse" in Swiss National TV. Don't miss the opportunity to see how a lay looks at our institute. Very impressive portrait and professional images in HD quality.

EVENTS
Infotag: Pupils' first contact with University
The traditional information day for high school pupils from Switzerland was again a great success. More than 4000 youngsters visited the University and get informed about the various curricula at the University of Basel. The pupil's interest for our Nanoscience curriculum seems to decrease. Therefore we plan to initiate further PR activities together with the students.
Media Conference for the First Argovia Professors
On 1st January, Prof. Roderick Lim and Prof. Martino Poggio, started their activities
as the first "Argovia Professors" at the University of Basel. Therefore, the public has
been informed in terms of a media conference, held the 26th Jnauary at the SNI.
The University rector pointed out the pioneering character of the publi-public partnership that
has evolved between the University of Basel and the canton Aargau.
Regierungsrat Rainer Huber, director for education in the Aargau government was happy
to see the progress in the development of the Swiss Nanoscience Institute and reminded
the audience of the fact that it is the first time that a canton invests into the University of the
neighbouring canton in such an important way.
Nanoscience in the snow
The fifth “Nanoscience In the Snow” meeting organized in the framework of the Swiss NCCR “Nanoscale Science” took place at the Kleine Scheidegg / Eigergletscher from Wednesday Jan. 14th to Friday Jan. 16th. In total, 45 participants met in an informal context and listened to a series of talks in physics, chemistry as well as biology.
We hope that this renewed opportunity to further develop the interactions within our NCCR met your expectations and look forward to seeing you at the next edition of the Nanoscience in the Snow.
NEW IN THE SNI
We are happy to welcome our new SNI members:
Since 01.01.2009:
Prof. Dr. Roderick Lim
Prof. Dr. Martino Poggio
PRIZES, AWARDS, .....
Pictures Award
Having found many wonderful pictures among the candidates for the Nano Picture Award 2009, it became a difficult task for the jury to select the three best images. Criterions have been the esthetic level as well as the scientific and nano-related origin of the pictures. The three winners are:
Serpil Boz, Mona Klein and Ana-Maria Popa
