Nanonews April 2009
WORDS FROM THE DIRECTOR
The second phase of the NCCR comes to an end soon and we are looking forward to the third phase that will start in June 2009. Since there is no site visit by the review panel this year, we decided to have a conference in Basel in order to stimulate exchange of results within and beyond our NCCR. This conference is called SwissNano2009 and will be held in Basel at the University's main building.
I want to encourage you all to follow the spirit of the Davos meeting and to participate with an oral presentation or a poster. We are happy to be able to present a number of high-ranked plenary speakers from inside and outside the SNI / NCCR.
Since Veronica Cerletti left the SNI end of March, we had to find a new person to take over the important "industry relation dossier". It's our pleasure to announce that we could negotiate a highly professional solution for this with the company COGIT, which already is in charge of the i-net Basel Nano initiative. Wolf Zinkl, CEO of COGIT, will take care of the development of the Argovia program for applied projects. The latter is a politically important task and will foster our collaborations with industry. In this context, there is an interesting new opportunity for the NCCRs to get additional funding from the SNF through the federal program for "Konjunkturelle Stabiliserungsmassnhamen". Collaborations with industry within applied projects will be funded in a rather un-bureaucratic way.
Finally I would like to express my best wishes and gratefulness to Veronica for her valuable contributions within the administrative team of the NCCR.
Best Regards
Christian Schönenberger

Swiss Nano Conference 2009, June 11 to 12, 2009, Basel
The Swiss Nano Conference organized in the framework of the Swiss NCCR “Nanoscale Science” will take place at the Kollegiengebäude in Basel from June 11 to 12. The deadline for registration is May 9, 2009. Please visit the event page for more information: www.nanoscience.ch/swissnano2009
Tecdays in Solothurn and in Liestal
Beginning of April and beginning of June, the SNI participates in the Tecd@ys in Solothurn and in Liestal. The Tecd@ys are an initiative of the swiss academy for engineering (SATW) and it's goal is to foster the education in Science and technology at Swiss schools. Different subjects related to nanoscience and nanotechnology are covered through the SNI. The Tecd@ys will continue also in 2010. If you are interested to participate with your own module, please contact Tibor Gyalog.
FAREWELL FROM VERONICA
Dear colleagues,
After four exciting years of working with you the time has come for me to tackle a new challenge. I am leaving the NCCR at end of March and will start at the EMPA on April 1st. There I will take the lead of the “Industry Portal”, the interface between the research at the EMPA and the Industry.
The years I spent working for the NCCR were years of important growth. Thanks to your support and good predisposition I had the chance to learn about different disciplines, research areas, and also the various philosophies and cultures in the research environment.
I would like to thank all of you for the great work, support and the good times. Working with you was both very interesting and lots of fun. I wish you all success with your research and hope to hear from you!
My best wishes
Verónica Cerletti
